At Château d’Issan, a 1855 Classified Growth in Margaux, the quality of the wines is above all built on the precision of the work carried out in both the vineyard and the cellar. For more than thirty years, Éric Pellon, the estate’s Technical Director, has guided the evolution of the property with dedication and passion. He reflects on his arrival at Issan, the transformations he has witnessed, and the memories that have shaped his career.

1. Can you tell us about the beginning of your career at Château d’Issan?

“I joined Château d’Issan on July 1st, 1993. After completing my studies, I was able to further my practical training at two renowned Médoc estates: working in the cellars at Château Ducru-Beaucaillou and in the vineyards at Château Lagrange.

At the time, I was supposed to continue at Lagrange, but mandatory military service — which I had postponed as long as possible — changed my plans. Naturally, the estate could not leave the position vacant for an entire year.

During that period, I began looking for a job. In the end, it was thanks to the owner of Château Cos d’Estournel, who passed my résumé on to Lionel Cruse, that the opportunity arose. After several months of discussions and no fewer than eight interviews, I eventually joined Château d’Issan.”

2. What major changes have you observed during your 33 years at Issan?

“Château d’Issan has always been a majestic estate, with a remarkable history and heritage. Our responsibility is to preserve this legacy while continuing to help it evolve.

Over the years, the work has focused both on gaining a deeper understanding of the vineyard plots, adapting grape varieties, and advancing winemaking techniques. These improvements have gone hand in hand with significant investments aimed at modernizing the production facilities. All of this has contributed to strengthening the quality of the wines and reinforcing Issan’s position among the great classified growths of Margaux. When I look back on how far we have come, I am almost surprised: 33 years already… I haven’t seen them go by.”

3. Which event particularly stands out in your memory at the estate?

“One of the most memorable moments was undoubtedly the Fête de la Fleur in 2009. This event, organized by the Commanderie du Bontemps, required tremendous preparation from the entire team. For several months, everyone worked together to welcome the wine world under the best possible conditions.

When the evening finally arrived, seeing Château d’Issan showcased before professionals and guests from all over the world was an especially powerful moment. It was a fleeting event, but it helped bring Issan international recognition. For me, it will always remain a particularly memorable experience.”
